Spring into Workshop Fun!

The MMLC is partnering with Northwestern Information Technology to offer an impressive set of workshops this Spring. Together, we will talk abou video editing in iMovie, making accessible PDFs in Acrobat, using Word and PowerPoint to create universal instructional materials, and video captioning. Let’s exercise our thinking muscles together!

iMovie

Mini-Movies in iMovie — In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to import video to iMovie and make short, professional-looking movies.  Attendees will learn how to add music, select and craft scenes, add titles and subtitles, and create smooth transitions.  Whether you’re using the video to flip your classroom, illustrate the material or provide a different perspective, the ability to create video will enhance your teaching and engage your students.

PDFs

Accessibility Workshop II — Nearly every course includes PDF documents. Some are clear, readable, searchable and enjoyable, while others can be hard to read and frustrating to use. This workshop will help you dramatically improve the readability and accessibility of PDF course documents. Using hands-on strategies, we will learn how to obtain and use the powerful tools within Adobe Acrobat Pro to help make course documents accessible for everyone.

Word & PowerPoint

Accessibility Workshop III —  Word and PowerPoint make up a backbone of scholarly communications. How can we use these tools to both simplify informational organization and better communicate ideas? For example, how can we make PowerPoint presentations more effective and accessible to all students? How can we use Microsoft Word’s built-in style features features that can help you both quickly design your documents for readability and accessibility. Using hands-on strategies, we will learn how to use the powerful tools within Microsoft PowerPoint and Word to help make course presentations and documents accessible for everyone.

Video Captioning

Accessibility Workshop IV Video can be a powerful teaching and learning tool. Subtitles and captions can make video even more engaging by rendering its content quickly searchable and accessible. In this workshop we will look at the most common video platforms used at Northwestern (YouTube, Zaption, Library Course Reserves, Canvas Video) and participants will reflect on best practices in providing captions and subtitles.
